The Journey Museum is seeking community-minded leaders to join its Board of Directors. This volunteer role offers a meaningful opportunity to support one of the Black Hills’ leading cultural institutions and help guide its strategic direction during an exciting period of growth.
As part of the Museum Alliance of Rapid City’s next phase—following the successful merger with the Black Hills Historical Society—the Museum is expanding its board to strengthen community representation and deepen local engagement.
Board members play a key role in providing strategic oversight, building partnerships, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the Museum’s mission to share the rich history, science, culture, and art of the Black Hills region.
The Museum is seeking candidates with experience in areas such as:
• Business, finance, or accounting
• Tourism, marketing, or communications
• Philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, or community engagement
• Public history, arts, or museum operations
• Cultural knowledge keepers or Indigenous community representation
Board responsibilities include:
• Attending monthly board meetings and participating in committee work
• Upholding the Museum’s mission, vision, and governance standards
• Serving as ambassadors within the community
• Supporting strategic planning and development initiatives
Interested applicants are invited to submit a letter of interest and résumé to Executive Director Conor McMahon outlining their experience and the perspective they would bring to the Board.
