***CALL FOR ARTWORK***
The Center for Western Studies, Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD
Exhibition Title: Rivers of the Plains
Exhibition Dates: March 9, 2026 – June 6, 2026
Call: Artwork exploring the landscapes, history, cultures, and ecology of the Missouri River and the river systems of the Northern Plains.
The Center for Western Studies invites regional artists to submit work for Rivers of the Plains, a juried exhibition celebrating the cultural, environmental, and historical significance of the Missouri River and the waterways that shape life on the Northern Plains.
This exhibition coincides with the launch of The Missouri: America’s Longest River, a forthcoming CWS publication featuring essays exploring the river’s environmental history, Indigenous significance, settlement, ecological changes, and its enduring place in the story of the Plains.
Rivers of the Plains will also serve as the backdrop for major Center for Western Studies and Augustana University spring programming, including The Boe Forum, The Dakota Conference, and other campus events.
Artists are invited to interpret the many meanings of the river—its ecology, heritage, stories, movement, and transformations—through any medium. Up to five artworks may be submitted.
