Internship Description Summary
The National Geographic Society is seeking a photography intern to join and support our Creative Team. The photography staff on this team works to identify visual assets that elevate the NGS brand and amplify our organization’s story and mission. This internship is designed to provide an overview of the skills needed in a photo editor role working closely with the Director of Photography and Sr. Photo Editor for Creative. Gain exposure to the various stages of planning photoshoots and event photography coverage, selecting and editing photography, asset management, rights clearances, and planning of museum exhibitions. Five Principal Learning Responsibilities
1. Expand understanding of photo editing, organization, and maintenance of the media assets. Gain knowledge of how to Interpret relevant release documentation ensuring that all images are being used properly regarding photo copyright and licensing. Assistance in adding metadata to photography assets for archive. (35%)
2. Work closely assisting the photo team to prepare photography assets for future requests for NGS stakeholders and archive. (20%)
3. Attend project meetings to observe and collaborate with creative staff, exhibit staff, and other key contributors. (20%)
4. Assist with photo shoot coordination during the Society’s June Explorers Festival Event ensuring the event photographers are where they need to be and be a helpful second hand. (10%)
5. Assist in fulfilling press requests to elevate NGS Explorers, programs and initiatives. (15%)
Related Field of Study Required
Current undergraduate or graduate student. Photography, media, or data asset management focused study is preferred. Student will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.
Knowledge and Skills Required
The ideal candidate has a range of creative and visual storytelling skills with a passion and eye for photography. Familiar with Adobe Photoshop, digital/media asset management software (such as Lightroom, Photo Mechanic, or Adobe Bridge), ShootProof, and Dropbox. The ideal candidate has excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work well with others and independently as needed.
