CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Seeking 10 actors and singers. Non-traditional, gender/race blind casting. Remember, folks— age is just a number.

Sweeney Todd (M, 35+) – Baritone
Vocal Range Top: Gb4
Vocal Range Bottom: F2
A wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna’s father, singularly
focused on taking bloody revenge. Broken, brooding, calculating, vicious, volatile, romantic and empathetic.

Mrs. Lovett (F, 35+) – Alto
Vocal Range Top: E5
Vocal Range Bottom: G3
A greedy entrepreneur and amoral meat pie shop owner. She is in love (or is it lust?) with Todd and turns his desire for
revenge into a profitable business venture. Must have exceptional comedic timing, while still being able to portray the
dark, and sad nature of the character.

Anthony Hope (M, 20-28) – Tenor
Vocal Range Top: F4
Vocal Range Bottom: Bb2
A naive, passionate and youthful sailor returning to London. He helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in
love with Johanna.

Johanna (F, 18-28) – Soprano
Vocal Range Top: A5
Vocal Range Bottom: Bb3
A lively young woman, full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. Todd’s long-lost daughter and Turpin’s ward.
Unexpectedly falls in love with Anthony Hope. Held captive by Judge Turpin and is the subject of his sexual desire.
NOTE: Mature sexual themes.

Tobias Ragg (F / M, 15-25) – Tenor
Vocal Range Top: Ab4
Vocal Range Bottom: Bb2
A young boy apprenticed to Pirelli. A charming and energetic con-artist. He finds a surrogate family in Todd and Lovett.
Descends into madness by the end of the play. Our tale will be told from his disturbed perspective.

Judge Turpin (M, 40+) – Bass/Baritone
Vocal Range Top: Gb4
Vocal Range Bottom: E2
A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in
the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd. An unsettling villain who is conflicted by his sexual urges and religious
devotion. Shares a unique bond with Todd, unaware of their dark history. NOTE: Mature sexual themes.

The Beadle (M, 25+) – Tenor
Vocal Range Top: D5
Vocal Range Bottom: D3
A pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Judge Turpin. Assumes ensemble roles.
