Join us at Henry’s Books in Spearfish on Saturday, January 10 from noon to 2 pm with local author Dave Raber. We’ll be celebrating the release of his two latest titles, “From Variety Show to Vietnam” and “The Flipside Files” with a book signing.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR…
Born and raised in Belle Fourche, SD, Gerald David “Dave” Raber is no stranger to storytelling. A graduate of the University of South Dakota with a degree in Journalism, he honed his skills as editor of “The Volante,” the university’s student newspaper. His life’s journey has taken him from the deck of Navy patrol boats to the offices of Ford Motor Company, eventually leading him to run a successful dealership in Pendleton, Oregon. Now retired, Raber resides in the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota.
ABOUT THE BOOKS…
In “From Variety Show to Vietnam,” Raber takes readers on a riveting personal journey from the bright lights of the campus variety show to the murky shadows of the Vietnam War. Drawing from his real-life service as a U.S. Navy officer commanding three PT boats in the Mekong Delta, Raber shares deeply personal letters written to his wife — newly pregnant with the couple’s first child when he deployed. Raber delivers a memoir that is both heartfelt and historically grounded: An intimate portrait of a young man’s transformation from optimistic student performer into battle-tested military leader and proud new father.
“The Flipside Files” showcases Raber’s storytelling versatility in a playful collection of fictional tales overflowing with intrigue, wit, and sly cultural insights. With a journalist’s eye and a novelist’s heart, Raber illuminates the hidden corners of everyday life, adding unexpected twists that linger in equal parts of surprise and satisfaction.
