In the fall of 2020, sculptor Dale Lamphere, South Dakota’s Artist Laureate, invited regional artists to collaborate with him on an art installation in the Monument Health Rapid City Hospital lobby. Each artist submitted their visual idea and a paragraph that describes “What Healing Means to Me.”

“It’s the weaving together of diversity that creates the fabric of a community,” Lamphere said. The piece features metal diamonds arranged in a 16-foot by 32-foot space. And 20 diamonds showcase the work of Black Hills and West River artists.

During this session, there is an introduction to the project, and a short film on the process of creating the community tapestry, followed by the presenters discussing the benefits of an inclusive approach that celebrates the diversity of the community and echoes the values of Monument Health. Dale Lamphere also speaks on the importance of considering not only the aesthetic but also the functional needs of the client, as well as an open Q&A session.
