The Tallgrass Artist Residency, in partnership with the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, is now accepting applications for our 2020 cycle. Learn more and find a link to apply on our website. The deadline is March 13, 2020.

Who Should Apply: The Tallgrass Artist Residency seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains. In the past, the program has focused on applicants based in the prairie ecoregion (← click the link to see a general map of this area). New in 2020, we will accept applications from artists outside of the prairie ecoregion for one additional residency period, treated as an “ecoregion exchange”.

Ideal applicants will have a strong body of work with a unique voice or perspective, a dedication to exploring place, and an interest in participating in a contemporary dialogue.

Commitments: We will invite 9 artists/artist teams to participate in two-week residency periods between May and September, 2020, with lodging provided at Matfield Station in Matfield Green, Kansas. Residents are expected to give a public program of their choosing during this two-week period at one of our partner venues. They are also expected to participate in a group exhibition and artist symposium on Saturday, October 3, 2020, with up to two nights of lodging provided.

Program Description: The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a unique program that offers individual artists/artist teams time and space to retreat and research in a rural, tallgrass prairie setting. Though the experience is rural, it is not meant to be isolating. Our team in Matfield Green, KS welcomes residents and helps in orientation to the Flint Hills region. We also have a great network of  regional partners. Past partners include the Kansas Creative Arts Industries CommissionTallgrass Prairie National Preserve, The Volland Store, The Bank Art Space, the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Konza Prairie Biological Station and more.

Please reach out by email with any questions about the program or applications process. Thank you for your interest in the Tallgrass Artist Residency and the Flint Hills of Kansas.

With gratitude,
