October 15, 2021 Deadline for Major Grants

The humanities help to engage, inform, and inspire South Dakotans in ways that broaden understanding of the complex world in which we live. To help ensure that all South Dakotans share in these benefits, the South Dakota Humanities Council awards approximately $85,000 in grants annually, providing non-profit organizations and tax-exempt government agencies with funds to develop and implement meaningful humanities programming in communities across our state.

We invite you to apply for a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council to fund your own humanities program. Grant requests up to $10,000 will be considered. Programs can come in a variety of formats – workshops, presentations, reading/discussion events, exhibits, media projects, and more. Programs should be free, open to the public, and attract a diverse audience. All applications must include a public discussion event. Our hope is that your programs will help people learn new information, consider different perspectives, and share ideas in order to better understand one another.

Because the South Dakota Humanities Council believes that public health and safety are top priorities, we are currently recommending that if applicants are planning an in-person gathering, they should also have a contingent option to switch to a virtual platform if it becomes necessary. We continue to follow CDC guidelines, updating the options for in-person gatherings considering their recommendations.

Visit our website at http://sdhumanities.org/participate/grants/ for more information about our grant opportunities. The website also provides our updated FY22 Grant Guidelines, General Grant Requirements, a grant application template, and other application instructions. We strongly encourage you to contact our grants coordinator (melinda@sdhumanities.org) before submitting your application so you can ask questions and receive guidance.

Keep in mind that in order to apply, the sponsoring organization must not have any currently open grant with the South Dakota Humanities Council (ARP grants do not count). The major grant deadline is October 15, 2021 for programs that take place after December 1, 2021.
