Founded in 1972, the South Dakota Humanities Council knows that the humanities help to engage, inform, and inspire South Dakotans in ways that broaden understanding of the complex world in which we live. To help ensure that all South Dakotans share in these benefits, the South Dakota Humanities Council awards federal grant funding annually, providing non-profit organizations and tax-exempt government agencies with funds to develop and implement meaningful humanities programming in communities across our state.
Our grant funding limit is $20,000.
If you have an exceptional program that requires funding above that level, please contact us. Programs can come in a variety of formats – workshops, presentations, reading/discussion events, exhibits, media projects, and more. Our hope is that your programs will help people learn new information, consider different perspectives, and share ideas in order to better understand one another. To help you prepare your grant application, we invite you to join us for a virtual grant writing workshop on September 15, 2022 from 3:00-4:00 pm CT. This workshop will introduce you to SDHC’s grant opportunities and teach you how to submit a competitive proposal.
The following topics will be included:
- An overview of South Dakota Humanities Council grants and requirements
- How to complete an application and tips for crafting a compelling project narrative
- How to complete the budget form and meet the matching fund requirements
- How a proposal is evaluated by SDHC

As of April 4, 2022, all recipients of federal money must register for a
Unique Entity ID (UEI) through the sam.gov website.
You will be required to enter your UEI number in order to submit your SDHC grant application.
What is the Unique Entity ID (UEI)?
- The Unique Entity ID (UEI) is a 12-character alphanumeric value
- Managed, granted, and owned by the government
- Serves as the authoritative unique entity identifier used by the federal government
- If your entity currently has a DUNS number and is already registered insam.gov, you have been issued a Unique Entity ID (UEI). This includes inactive registrations. You can login to sam.gov with your current login credentials to obtain the UEI number.
- If your entity does not have a DUNS or is not registered in sam.gov, you will need to request your UEI through sam.gov. A successful request will provide the UEI immediately.
The website also provides our updated FY23 Grant Guidelines, General Grant Requirements, a grant application template, and other application instructions. Because the South Dakota Humanities Council believes that public health and safety are top priorities, we urge you to continue to monitor and follow CDC guidelines.
