Avera is in the process of constructing a new Hospital, Clinic and Long Term Care Facility Gregory, SD.  Avera is desirous of appropriate photographic imagery throughout the facility, in prominent locations including the front entrance, Avera Medical Group Clinic, Emergency Department, Inpatient areas and Long Term Care spaces.  The facility is scheduled to open in winter 2022.  

Mission and Vision

The development of the new Avera facility is in keeping with the mission of Avera Health:

“Avera is a health ministry rooted in the Gospel.  Our mission is to make a positive impact in the lives and health of persons and communities by providing quality services guided by Christian values.”

Scope of Building

The scope includes a new Clinic, Hospital, Lab and X-Ray services, Physical Therapy, Emergency Departments and Long Term Care.   

Art Location

The intent of this RFP is to obtain photography that will be unique in its application within the facility.  The Avera Art Committee will have final rights on placement of all artwork.

All individuals wishing to respond to this RFP for photographic work must submit a written and/or electronic statement of their interest and intention by Friday, July 29, 2022, no later than 12 NOON to:

Artistic Theme

Avera is proud of its sponsorship by the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters.  These two organizations of religious women have a long history of ministry and service to the people of the Dakotas.  More information on their history and sponsorships can be found at www.Avera.org.  

*The Avera Art Committee has come up with some specific theme words for this project:

Images promoting and supporting South Dakota’s West River Culture.  Images supporting Native American Culture.  Images promoting and inclusive of surrounding communities near Gregory, SD.  Images supporting local activities such as rodeos, 4th of July celebrations, sunflowers, the river and community interactions.  Please also see the philosophy highlights noted later in the call. 

Please consider the above themes when selecting your submission images for this particular call for artwork.   

Submission of Proposal

Proposals must be submitted to Avera no later than Friday, August 19, 2022, no later than 12 NOON.  Submissions will not be accepted after this deadline unless postdated prior to the 19th.  All proposals should include the following:

  • Contact information including current address and phone number.
  • Brief information on the artist if you have never submitted before.
  • Ability to make the October 28, 2022 deadline to selected framer
  • Budget for the printed piece without frame.  Shipping or delivery costs must be included in your submission price and cannot exceed the provided budget per piece.  
  • Available image sizes to present for purchase are 16”x24” or 20”x30”, please clearly communicate price based on size.  Special consideration for panoramic images will be made.  Submissions should not be final size, only a representation of the presented work.     
  • Electronic submissions will not be accepted. 
  • Individual physical submissions should be no larger than a 4×6 printed photo, but submissions can also be a collection of multiple images on 1 sheet of photo paper.
  • All individual physical submissions must be labeled and easily identifiable by artist.  We will use your labeling as a way of ordering.  
  • Submissions should include the proposed paper style as well as any other information that may impact framing or installation. 
  • Submissions will become the property of Avera and will not be returned.

Questions, with respect to this RFP, should be directed to Angela Storm 605-322-7837 or via email at Angela.Storm@avera.org.  Should a site visit be required, it will be scheduled through Angela and only available for contracted artists.

Budget

Avera has established a budget for the printed photographic images at a not to exceed $300 per piece.  Budget is to include all delivery and shipping costs.  We look to purchase approximately 88 pieces of photography.  

Selection Process

The selection committee consists of members of the Avera staff, Administration, community members, residents and architectural and design consultants to Avera as well as Art Therapy staff.  This committee will review the submitted proposals from each artist.  Based on the Art Committee Philosophy the committee will make final selections and then enter into a contract with the selected artist to complete the project.  Our goal has always been to support as many local artists as we can.  

Avera Art Committee Philosophy Key Points:

    • Color is important and desirable, brighten up not muted.  No black and white images.
    • Look for images that provoke powerful words like growth, faith, hope and transformation.
    • Images that speak to spirituality.
    • Images that reflect our diversity.
    • Positive reaction to American Indian art and images.
    • Water, scenery, living trees and living plants.
    • Images of our normal daily lives (community events, harvest, planting, etc.).
    • People are comfortable with the familiar.
    • Avoid images of sunsets and roads leading to nowhere.
    • Avoid images that show weather extremes (too much snow and ice or too much dry and parched land).
