Gallery marks return to regular operations with professional exhibits

(SPEARFISH, SD – 04/26/2022) The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center has once again opened the door for local artists to exhibit their work with an annual Call for Artists. The call marks a return to regular gallery operations after months of specialty shows at the arts center.

“This is an exciting time at the Matthews,” says gallery manager, Kara Carver. “Coming off the heels of several specialty exhibits, including our community art show, we have witnessed the tremendous amount of talent that exists in the Black Hills. This call allows us to showcase our homegrown artists, both new and returning.”

The Matthews recently made adjustments to their artist contract, including a reduced commission. “As part of our commitment to promoting local art,” explains Carver, “we want to make it profitable for artists to create and sell their work. Reducing our commission structure will, we hope, allow for more diversity to be represented in the gallery.”

The call is open to all artists living in the Black Hills area, whether they have been previously contracted by the Matthews or are new to the organization. All submissions will be juried by the Matthews exhibits committee. During this process, applicants will be assessed on the quality of work submitted and the needs of the gallery in terms of aesthetic balance and diversity.

To have their work considered, entrants are required to submit three digital images of their art, a brief artist statement, and an application which can be found on the Matthews website or picked up at the gallery. Entries will be accepted until Saturday, May 14 at 5 pm and all work will be juried the following week. The Matthews will begin exhibiting the work of contracted artists beginning Tuesday, May 31.

“It’s really exhilarating to see new work come in and to have the opportunity to talk with the artists about their process and background,” says Carver. “There’s something special about the Black Hills–we have such a wealth of truly gifted artists. It’s an honor to be able to walk with them on their creative journey.”
