About Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick

Kahn and Selesnick combine photography, sculpture, costume, and installation art to create scenes that evoke a sense of otherworldliness. “We see ourselves at the intersection of magic and science,” Selesnick said.

The 2023 SURF Artists in Residence were announced in January marking the first time a pair of artists have showcased their work at the BHSU. During their four-week immersive experience in Lead, SD, the artists explored a variety of levels underground. The duo will also be featured as the keynote speakers at BHSU Arts Conference in October.

About the SURF Artist-in-Residence (SURF AiR) program

The SURF AiR program invites artists to create work inspired by SURF’s unique science, location and history. SURF is the deepest underground laboratory in the United States, reaching nearly a mile below the surface. It houses experiments in physics, biology, geology, and engineering.

Applications for the 2024 SURF Artist in Residence are currently being accepted through November 1, 2023.
