Campers will explore the history\, rhythms\, and improvisation of jazz through hands-on sessions with expert educators\, using voice\, movement\, and instruments to grow their creativity and confidence. The week will culminate in a special live performance moment on the Levitt stage\, where campers showcase their new skills and celebrate their jazz journey with family and friends.  \n				Meet the Instructors \n				Meet Ms. Mickleson\n				Allison Mickelson is an experienced music and theatre educator who is passionate about inspiring young performers. Currently teaching music at Eugene Field A+ Elementary School\, Ms. Mickelson brings her extensive background in professional theatre to the classroom\, creating an engaging and supportive environment for students to explore their creativity. She has performed in acclaimed productions across the country\, including Fun Home\, Next to Normal\, and Elf The Musical\, and has worked with prestigious companies like Portland Center Stage and Syracuse Stage. This summer\, she will bring her solo show\, Off The Map\, to Sioux Falls.\nWith a strong foundation in music education and professional training in acting\, voice\, and dance\, Ms. Mickelson is dedicated to helping young artists build confidence and discover their unique voices. Outside of teaching and performing\, she enjoys hiking\, yoga\, and exploring the world’s cultures and cuisines.  \n				Meet Dr. Hoesing\n				Peter J. Hoesing (Pete) is an ethnomusicologist who serves as Associate Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Dakota State University. As part of an Ethics and Humanities Faculty Section\, Hoesing is also Director of Medical Humanities at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. He previously taught at Grinnell College\, Claflin University\, and Florida State University\, where he earned a Ph.D. in 2011. His book with University of Illinois Press (2021) and award-winning documentary short examine the music of Ugandan traditional healers. His other research and teaching interests span Africa and its global diaspora\, especially East African expatriate communities and popular music in the Americas. Hoesing’s research has garnered generous funding from the Fulbright-Hays Program\, the Krebs Foundation\, the Mellon Foundation\, UNCF Programs\, the South Carolina Arts Commission\, and the South Dakota Humanities Council. Building on a sustained commitment to performance as an essential component of research and teaching\, Hoesing’s work has involved intensive study of several instruments\, ranging from drum set and singing to Ugandan strings and a wide variety of percussion. As a jazz drummer\, he has performed with Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson\, Etienne Charles\, Roland Guerin\, Jason Marsalis\, Marcus Printup\, and Marcus Roberts\, among others. He studied merengue and salsa with two Dominican artists\, Dr. Juan-Ramón Guzman and percussion phenom Julio Figueroa.\nWith a strong foundation in music education and professional training in acting\, voice\, and dance\, Ms. Mickelson is dedicated to helping young artists build confidence and discover their unique voices. Outside of teaching and performing\, she enjoys hiking\, yoga\, and exploring the world’s cultures and cuisines.  \n				Meet Mr. Galindo\n				Edwin Galindo is a guitarist and composer from Bogotá\, Colombia. He’s in love with the cultures and languages of the world. Currently\, he works teaching music and creating content for his specialty\, contemporary solo Guitar as he finishes his master’s degree in composition. Starting from training in the classical and Flamenco guitar and from the varied sound context of the music of his country\, Galindo wanted to consolidate his artistic experience into his own sound and language\, translating the sounds of other instruments and formats and exploring techniques that allow him to fully exploit the possibilities of the acoustic guitar. From the classical guitar\, Flamenco\, and jazz\, he has searched for elements to express the sound of Latin American music genres as a strategy to bring a part of the folklore of his region closer to the academic field and\, at the same time\, expand the possibilities of the guitar.  \n				Levitt Jam Camp is run in partnership with Augustana University.  \n				Thank you to our sponsor of this event:  \n				Who should sign up for camp?\n				The Jazz Explorers camp is ideal for students aged 10-12. Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation to and from the Levitt Jam Camp activities.  \n				When is the final performance? \nStudents from the Jazz Explorers Camp will take the stage as part of a Levitt series concert on Saturday\, June 12th\, at 7:00 PM. They will perform select songs they’ve developed during camp as the Opening Act for that evening’s Levitt at the Falls summer concert.\nThe concert features open seating at the Levitt venue\, and no tickets are required. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show for free! The performance will also be live-streamed on the Levitt at the Falls Facebook and YouTube pages. Artist announcements and the full schedule for the Levitt concert season—featuring 50 FREE concerts—will be released in late April.  \n				Are there scholarships available for tuition?\n				Yes! Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors\, camp tuition is set up as a pay-what-you-can system. The cost to run our camp is $125 per student. In partnership with the Sioux Falls Children’s Choir\, campers will sing as a choir while learning how to blend\, harmonize\, and perform confidently in a group\, all while building strong vocal technique and healthy singing habits. Throughout the camp\, students will rehearse songs in a variety of genres that culminate in a joyful performance for family and friends at the Levitt.  Beyond the music\, Vocal Jam Camp is about having fun\, making new friends\, and discovering how singing together can inspire creativity\, confidence\, and a lifelong love of music. \n				Meet the Instructors \n				Meet Kaela\n				Kaela Schuiteman holds a B.M. in Music Education with honors and endorsements in choral and instrumental music from the University of South Dakota. She currently performs with Transept\, a professional choral ensemble in Sioux Falls\, South Dakota. Previously\, Kaela has performed with the South Dakota Symphony Chorus\, at St. Joseph’s Cathedral as a soloist for weddings and funerals\, and with Vocal Artists of Iowa. Kaela also teaches private voice and piano lessons.\nIn addition to her passion for performing\, Kaela finds immense joy in sharing the unique power of music with students of all ages. Kaela has several years of teaching experience that include K-12 vocal music\, directing musicals\, coaching speech\, and teaching private piano and voice lessons. As the Executive and Artistic Director of the Sioux Falls Children’s Choir\, Kaela feels incredibly fortunate to fill her evenings sharing her love of music with the talented young musicians in Sioux Falls.  \n				Meet Alia\n				Alia Robison is the founder and director of Music in Me\, which offers small group music classes and private lessons for ages Birth-18. She also collaborates with micro schools and homeschool co-ops in the area to bring music to their students. Alia serves as the assistant choir and handbell director at her church and has been in charge of their children’s music for the past 10 years. Prior to starting Music in Me\, Alia worked as a PreK-5th grade music teacher in the Harrisburg School district.\nGrowing up\, Alia sang in the Sioux Falls Girls Chorale for many years. Through that experience\, alongside other musical endeavors\, she became confident that she wanted to spend her life sharing her love for music with the community. In college\, she had an internship with the Vermillion Children’s Choir and the United Church of Christ’s Children’s Choir. Camp participants will learn songwriting skills\, build confidence and gain inspiration from local songwriters throughout the week with engaging programming hosted at Augustana University. Levitt Songwriting Camp will culminate with a performance on the Levitt stage — showcasing the work of the campers alongside a professional musical artist as part of a Levitt Series concert event.   \n				Meet the Instructors \n				Meet Janice\n				Singer / Songwriter Janice Gilbert grew up in rural South Dakota. Like most performers\, she started singing at an early age\, mostly in her church and community. Her music is described as a blend of down-home roots and contemporary country. Gilbert uses her experiences from growing up on the farm to fuel her songwriting as evidenced in songs like “Corn in the Silo”\, “Bloom”\, and “She Can Haul”. Her songs have placed in national songwriting competitions as well earning the title and a guitar for the Bluebird Cafe’s 30th Anniversary Songwriting Contest with “No One Has to Go” which was also featured on Season Five of the White Wall Sessions. After a 7-year stint in Nashville\, TN honing her craft\, Gilbert returned to roots in 2013 and continues to play her original music at various venues and events throughout the region. Janice is an experienced educator and award-winning 7-12 th grade music instructor. She is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) and spearheads the local NSAI Sioux Falls Songwriters group. \n				Meet Emily\n				Emily Roehl (they/she) is an artist and scholar who makes work about energy\, the environment\, and social justice. Roehl joined the English & Journalism Department at Augustana University in 2022 and teaches courses on writing\, environmental literature\, and comic books. Roehl co-runs Minneapolis-based artist book publisher Mystery Spot Books\, which has exhibited locally and internationally and is held in the collections of the New York Public Library\, the St. Louis Public Library\, the Midway Contemporary Art Library\, the Floating Library\, and the MCAD Library\, among others. \n				Levitt Jam Camp run in partnership with Augustana University.  \n				Thank you to our sponsor of this event:  \n				Who should sign up for camp?\n				Levitt Songwriting Jam Camp is designed to empower high school girls and is led by inspiring female songwriters. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Arts South Dakota and the South Dakota Arts Council\, the Augustana Music Academy (AMA) provides high-quality professional development for music educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. Held on Augustana University’s campus from July 6-9\, AMA offers a diverse blend of workshops and interactive sessions. Participants will have opportunities for hands-on learning equipping them with practical skills to enhance their teaching practices and better support their students. \nEducators can earn up to two graduate\, undergraduate or recertification (CEU) credits during the academy.
