BLACK HILLS COMMUNITY THEATRE ANNOUNCES…
Play Reading Series
Starting in 2019, Black Hills Community Theatre will present 3 One Night Only readings of productions that BHCT would otherwise be unable to produce as mainstage shows but are still stories that we feel should be told to our community.
All productions will have limited staging, technical elements and rehearsal periods. Performances will be open to the public.
Angels in America, Part One: Millenium Approaches by Tony Kushner
Friday, February 15th, 2019
Studio Theater at 7:30pm.
In the first part of Tony Kushner’s look at 1980’s New York City, a gay man is abandoned by his lover when he contracts the AIDS virus, and a closeted Mormon lawyer’s marriage to his pill-popping wife stalls. Other characters include the infamous McCarthy-ite lawyer Roy Cohn, a former drag queen who works as a nurse, and an angel.
In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) by Sarah Ruhl

Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat ‘hysterical’ women (and some men), the play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household.

In a suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit, Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door and invite their new neighbors Sharon and Kenny over for a barbecue. As the action unfolds we learn that Sharon and Kenny met at rehab, neither is employed, and they don’t own a stick of furniture. The quintessential American back-yard party turns quickly into something more dangerous—and filled with potential.
