The Matthews has been selected as a participant in the 2023 NEA Big Read and is excited to announce a Call for Artists for a special “Fantasy and Mythos” exhibition! This year’s Big Read novel is Madeline Miller’s fantasy, Circe. To celebrate the novel’s theme of magic and lore, we welcome any works of art that reflect fantasy, legend, mystery, and the imaginative spirit!
This call for entry is open to all artists within the Black Hills. All work must reflect the theme of “Fantasy and Mythos.” Artists may submit up to two works in any medium (painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, three-dimensional work, fiber works, graphic design, etc.) for display. All hanging artwork must be framed with a wire on the back for mounting. Artists are responsible for delivering their own work to the Matthews Gallery during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. Pieces must be received in the gallery by Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
There is no fee to enter. Works for sale (highly recommended) will receive 78% compensation if sold, with the remaining 22% supporting gallery and art education programming at the Matthews.
The exhibition will be open to the public until Friday, March 24. All unsold work must be picked up from the Matthews Gallery by March 31.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, January 13 from 5-7 pm in the Matthews Gallery. The public is welcome to attend this reception which will include the first look at exhibited artwork, free hors d’ oeuvres and a cash bar.
