The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) is pleased to announce a new exhibition of wet plate photographs by image-maker Shane Balkowitsch “Shadow Catcher.” The exhibition will be on display from April 8th through August 6th, 2022 in the Ruth Brennan Gallery of the Dahl Arts Center. The exhibition will include 60 original wet plate prints created by Shane in his studio, Nostalgic Glass Wet Plate Studio, in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Shane is a self-taught large format photographer. Beginning in 2012, his goal is to capture 1000 Native Americans with the wet plate collodion process. This process has been around for 160 years. Shane has been recognized internationally and has work in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum, the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and the Royal Photographic Society in London.
The original glass plates will be available for sale and in addition, we will have copies of his book Northern Plains Native Americans: A Wet Plate Perspective and prints of the original pieces available for sale in our gift shop. This exhibition benefits the American Indian College Fund.
Shane will be hosting a demonstration on wet plate collodion photography on April 9th from 1-4pm at the Dahl Arts Center. More information on this event will come soon.
