Yankton, SD — Yankton Area Arts is proud to present “Pieces of Me,” a compelling new solo exhibit by local artist and designer Ann Smith, opening Thursday, May 2 at 1:00 PM at the GAR Hall Art Gallery. The exhibit runs through June 3, 2025 and showcases a powerful blend of mixed media that highlights Ann’s lifelong exploration of texture, design, and self-expression.
A special Artist Meet & Greet will be held Friday, May 2 from 5:00–6:30 PM, where visitors can meet Ann, view her work, and ask questions about her process and inspiration.
Ann Smith brings a rich background in art and design to this exhibit. Born in Astoria, Oregon, she earned her BFA in History and Design from the University of Oregon and later a teaching certificate from Yankton College. Her extensive career has included art education, public school teaching, and over three decades of professional interior design through her business, Ann Smith Interiors, housed in Yankton’s historic train station.
Ann’s design projects have spanned the country—from Chicago to Florida to South Dakota’s Governor’s Mansion—always with a keen eye for detail and the expressive power of materials. Her work in this exhibition reflects her journey through a wide variety of media and techniques including encaustics, felt, watercolor, handmade paper, and acrylics.
“I am drawn to texture,” says Smith. “Many of the pieces in this exhibit demonstrate the impact of texture in all forms of artistic expression. The combinations of different techniques help create unusual compositions that feel both challenging and uniquely my own.”
