Defining an Iconic American Landscape
The Rapid City Arts Council is pleased to present Painting the West, an exhibition of oil paintings by Aaron and Jenny Wuerker. The exhibit opens on Friday, October 5, 2018 with an artists’ reception from 5 – 7 pm. Both artists will be here to greet the public. The show will be on display until Saturday, February 2, 2019 and will be located in the Ruth Brennan Gallery at the Dahl Arts Center.
This artist couple has been painting the Wyoming landscape together for nearly 25 years. “The need to define an iconic American landscape” has repeatedly surfaced for both of them. For Jenny, that means capturing the feeling of the stark expanse. She does this in large scale paintings consisting of big skies that race back to meet distant ridges with light stretching to the horizon. In Aaron’s work, the shapes of industrial objects mimic natural formations in the landscape which create silent interactions. In this exhibit, the artists hope to share “a vision of the Western landscape that one might identify the next time they see a massive cloud formation or road signs lined up the horizon.”
The Wuerkers live outside Buffalo, Wyoming with their two teenage children. Jenny received her BA from Yale University and an MFA from the American University. Aaron received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Yale University. They own Crazy Woman Fine Art Gallery in Buffalo, WY.
