This class is for those who have completed Pottery Foundations or similar basic classes. It will explore clay hand-building and surface decoration techniques, such as deliberately making cracks, mixing different colored clays, building simple figurines, and mending broken green/bisque-ware.

You can register for any of the first 3 lessons individually or for the entire class of 4 lessons at a reduced fee. The last lesson will be glazing. You can choose to glaze your bisque-fired pieces in the class or do it independently during the Open Pottery Studio hours. Glazes and some basic tools will be provided.

Students are encouraged to bring their own modeling tools, a dust mask and disposable gloves. Students are required to purchase their own clay. We recommend white-colored clay especially in the second lesson (with mason stains). Navajo White Clay will be available for sale at the Dahl while supplies last.

Lesson 1: Sodium silicate and forming decorative surface cracks

Lesson 2: Mason stains and marbling with colored clays

Lesson 3: Hollow building of a small figurine
