Book to Film Movie Night: “Green Book”

Rapid City, SD – March 8, 2019 – Friday, March 15 from 6:30 – 8:40 p.m. at the downtown library (610 Quincy Street, upstairs) we will be screening our March Book to Film Movie selection and Academy Award Winner for Best Picture Green Book. Working class Italian American bouncer Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) chauffeurs an African American classical pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour in the 1960s from Manhattan to the Deep South. They rely on The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide to the few establishments that were safe for the African Americans.

Victor Hugo Green published the first annual volume of The Negro Motorist Green Book in 1963, later renamed The Negro Travelers’ Green Book. Green was an African American postal carrier living in Harlem. His books were published from 1936 to 1966 with 15,000 copies printed each year. Many locations had no hotels or motels that would accept African American guests, so Green listed “tourist homes” where families could rent a room to a traveler. Green sold his guide book by mail order and through black-owned businesses. Green Book is rated PG-13. Popcorn and beverages will be served.
