SUMMARY:Pierre Players Presents: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: A new and shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of depravity\, lust\, love and horror. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London\, Henry Jekyll’s experiments with exotic “powders and tinctures” have brought forth his other self—Edward Hyde\, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest\, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas\, and so the two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who shall be the master and who his slave\, with multiple Hydes portrayed by members of the cast.

SUMMARY:Always a Student
DESCRIPTION:The NSU Art Department is pleased to announce its new gallery exhibition “Always a Student” displayed at  the Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery on the campus of Northern State University in Aberdeen\, SD. The  two-person exhibition features the artwork of artists Michael Aasness and Mark Stemwedel.   \nThe artwork will be on display from January 12 – March 6\, 2026. A closing reception is planned to be held  on Friday\, March 6 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The exhibition primarily focuses on painting but also includes a  range of artworks\, including mixed media\, drawings\, and sculpture. Northern Galleries are open from 8 am  to 5 pm and by appointment on weekends. The gallery will also be open during music and theatre  performances in the evenings. Artist talks are free and open to the public.  \n“Always a Student” will provide a perspective on teachers’ reciprocal and evolving connection with their  students. It will celebrate the ongoing and cyclical nature of creativity\, teaching\, and mentorship of art  instructors. Featuring the works of two South Dakota art educators\, the exhibition will highlight the diverse  perspectives\, techniques\, and inspirations that each of them brings to their roles as teachers.  \nMichael Aasness has taught art to grades 6-12 at Sioux Valley School District in Volga\, SD\, for nine years.  Michael is a 2017 graduate from the Studio Art Program at SDSU in Art Education\, with an emphasis in  painting. Michael continues to exhibit his artwork professionally throughout the Midwest\, which includes a  number of solo and group exhibitions throughout his career thus far. In the 2020- 2021 school  year\, Michael was named “Teacher of the Year” for Sioux Valley School District and was nominated for  South Dakota Art Educator of the Year.  \nAs a student\, Michael studied painting under Mark Stemwedel at SDSU. Mark Stemwedel has taught  courses in painting and drawing since 2008. He earned an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of South  Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from South Dakota State University. Mark’s paintings have  been featured at the Washington Pavilion and IPSO Gallery in Sioux Falls\, SD. His work has also been  displayed at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings\, SD\, and in numerous national juried exhibitions.  He previously received a South Dakota Arts Council Artist Development Grant. In 2023\, he was awarded  the South Dakota Arts Council Artist Fellowship.  \nMichael and Mark have impacted students from our region by sharing the importance of artistic exploration  and creative expression. As artists\, they contribute to the local and regional artistic community and  continue to exhibit their artwork throughout the Midwest.  \nEXHIBITION NARRATIVE  \n“Always a Student” – Michael Aasness and Mark Stemwedel  \nFrom the outside\, a teacher/student relationship may appear hierarchical. However\, in art education  it is far more reciprocal. Specific teacher/student roles are defined only within a classroom  framework for a semester or a few short years. Students grow and move into their own professional  roles as teachers. Teachers build connections and help others achieve their goals and dreams. The  true nature of those connections is that we inform and inspire each other\, perhaps in different  ways\, and artistic growth benefits from these meaningful interactions. Sometimes\, artists have no  other teacher to help them except themselves. Teaching and learning in the arts are fundamentally  different\, but lifelong learning is the goal. It is not about a specific answer but about searching. It is  about learning to learn. It is about creating your own path of discovery. Students become teachers.  Teachers become students.

SUMMARY:Seven Art Movements: A Tactile Exhibition | Gallery Reception
DESCRIPTION:Unlike a traditional museum setting\, this accessible art exhibition invites visitors to experience art through touch and sound. Guests are encouraged to gently explore raised surfaces\, shapes and textures using both hands while listening to audio descriptions through provided headphones. Touch-activated sensors are embedded throughout each piece to offer additional insight into the artwork. \nPresented by Tactile Images in collaboration with the National Federation of the Blind\, this interactive museum experience removes barriers for blind and low-vision visitors in a predominantly sighted world. By combining tactile printing\, braille text and audio narration\, the exhibition creates a multisensory way to engage with art history.

SUMMARY:Shared Reflections | Nancyjane Huehl + Angela Behrends
DESCRIPTION:Shared Reflections\nArtist Reception\nFriday March 6; 6 – 8pm \nIn their first co-exhibition\, artists Nancyjane Huehl and Angela Behrends find connection in nature and daily life. Using paint\, print and mixed media they create uplifting and engaging artworks reflective of contemplation and playfulness. Both noted career artists\, Huehl and Behrends center their work on experience in the natural world. It is their shared belief that when art is created with intention and purpose\, it is an expression of authentic observation between the artist and their audience. Together\, Huehl and Behrends strive for Shared Reflections to serve as a conduit of inspiration\, connection\, and insight. \nAbout the Artists: \nAngela Behrends \nI was looking for a way to draw in space when I taught 3-D design. Steel wire was available at hardware and farm stores\, and allowed me and my students to explore shape\, volume\, and form. I started collecting my students’ unwanted wire exercises because I couldn’t stand to let perfectly good sculpture material go to the landfill. When I crushed a bunch of abandoned wire spheres and 3-D sketches together\, I recognized a memory: \nMy parents rented an RV and drove their little kids to western South Dakota for a family vacation. I was three or four years old\, and my only memory of the trip was climbing up to a bench at the RV table so that I could see what my sisters were excited about. Just outside the glass louvres was the most majestic animal! A herd of bison had wandered into our campground\, and except for the window screen\, I could have touched one of them. \nI read Dan O’Brien’s books about how bison manage prairie\, and learned too much about their heartbreaking history and near-demise. I apologized to all of the taxidermy mounts I encountered in outdoor sporting goods stores. How can I honor these animals? By making wire bison. They exist somewhere between 3-D scribbling and steel wire crochet. Every member of the herd develops with its own personality. \nAngela Behrends grew up in MN\, earned an MFA at UNL\, taught at DSU in Madison\, SD\, and now resides in Sioux Falls with her three cats. She has artwork in permanent collections at the State of South Dakota\, Washington Pavilion\, Dahl Arts Center\, and South Dakota Art Museum. \nNancyjane Huehl \nEach piece begins as an intuitive yet intentional observation of the natural world. The pencil marks offer clarity and intention\, while layers of oil bring depth\, atmosphere\, and the movement of color. This balance between order and intuition mirrors how identity is shaped — both constructed and organic\, deliberate and instinctive. Through this process the subtle moments the self and environment merge — the boundaries between human experience and the natural world become porous\, with composition and color becoming a vessel for memory and transformation. \nHuehl’s work has been featured in exhibitions including: The Washington Pavilion\, Center for Western Studies\, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society International\, South Dakota Art Museum\, Women Artists of the West International\, St. Louis Artist’s Guild International\, New Orleans Art Association International\, and the Pearson Lakes Art Center. Huehl is also \nhonored to be a recipient of: South Dakota Arts Council Artists Grant\, M. Graham Oil Painters Award N.O.A.P.S.\, Signature Artist” with the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society N.O.A.P.S.
