SUMMARY:An Evening with Tom Lin
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to An Evening with Tom Lin\, author of “Babylon\, South Dakota\,” on Thursday\, May 28 at 5:30 at Henry’s Books. \nWe’ll be in conversation with the author about his genre-bending novel\, which has been hailed as “…wonder-full\, enchanted and enchanting…the most excited I’ve been about a new book in ages.” (Kaveh Akbar\, author of “Martyr!”)\, and “… a flawless novel that belongs in a category all its own.” (Paige Lewis\, author of “Canon”). \nEach $40 ticket (plus tax & ticket fee) entitles the holder to a copy of “Babylon\, South Dakota.” Seating for this special event is limited–reserve your spot today! \nABOUT “BABYLON\, SOUTH DAKOTA”… When Saul Keng Hsiu and his wife\, Mei Lee\, move from China to the United States to take possession of a 160-acre homestead bequeathed to them by a distant relative\, all they have are the possessions on their back\, some hidden gold\, and a pocketful of chrysanthemum seeds. After a rocky start and a long\, harsh winter\, the couple find themselves successfully raising chrysanthemums and livestock\, and soon after\, a daughter\, Mara. \nBut when representatives from the US Army Corps of Engineers buy an acre of the Hsiu’s farmland and begin building a missile silo\, the inexplicable starts to occur: Mara can commune with the animals on the farm\, Mei develops a hidden talent for augury\, and the chrysanthemums become impervious to everything. When the Hsius learn that the project on their farm is an effort to make America’s nuclear deterrent invulnerable\, they see firsthand the long arm of power and empire. \nIn the years and generations that follow\, increasingly impacted by the silo and its residue\, the Hsius experience strange\, wondrous\, and tragic events on their farm. An ambitious epic and an ode to the beauty and glory of our connection to the natural world\, Babylon\, South Dakota upends the idea of “strangers in a strange land” to become a classic American story. It is a daring novel about how choices reverberate across generations and asks us what we owe to one another. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR… Tom Lin was born in China and immigrated to the United States when he was four. A graduate of Pomona College\, he also holds a PhD from the University of California\, Davis. His first novel\, “The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu\,” won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence. He teaches English and creative writing at the University of Iowa.

SUMMARY:Grandview Gallery's Joy Fest 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Grandview Gallery’s Joy Fest Concert with Trista Reinert! Join us for an unforgettable evening of live music and local poetry at Grandview Gallery. \nCome hear the mellow sound of the talented Trista Reinert of Wall. This in-person event promises to be a night to remember\, so mark your calendars and come ready for an unforgettable night on the prairie! \nTrista started guitar at age five and began to sing along with the songs she learned. Trista has well honed in her vocals and executes strong control of her tones and range. She is influenced by country music greats such as Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson\, and will share a variety of old country and Christian music with a country style. \nCurrently resided in the Wall area as a paraprofessional in the Wall School district\, Trista is also working towards her teaching degree and has also been on staff at Rainbow Bible Ranch. \nAlong with Trista\, we welcome a few local poets to share their spoken word in poems written about life in South Dakota: Ralph Wamsher of Watertown\, and M J McMillian of Murdo. \nThis concert is to raise funds for Grandview Gallery’s continued restoration. Tickets are free with a suggested $25 cover at the door. \nLimited to 30 seats! \nGrandview Gallery is a historic school house\, one of Jones County’s original 54 country schools\, currently in the process of restoration. With the exterior completed\, as well as a foundation\, we now look to preserving the inside of the building. Electricity has been brought to the school house and the current project is to rewire the building for full electrical use.

SUMMARY:Karen Kinder | To Everything\, There is a Season | Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:To Everything\, There is a Season\nThe Work of Karen Kinder\nShowing June 2026 \nArtist Reception June 5th\, 6 – 8pm \nWith each changing season\, there is a tactile transition; we switch out snow boots for seeds\, Pontoons for pumpkins. In the midst of these shifts\, the colors of the seasons swiftly pass us by. We have a tendency to become so immersed in the changes\, that the colors and textures are merely the backdrop of the human hustle. \nWith her series\, To Everything There is a Season\, Karen Kinder seeks to focus our vision and explore the vibrancies of change. From the soft mauves of January\, to the jubilant jewel tones of June\, Kinder provides a space to embrace on the gifts of the seasons.
