SUMMARY:Easter Cantata
DESCRIPTION:It is the time of year for Sturgis-area singers to prepare for the 17th performance of its annual Easter Cantata. The choir began weekly rehearsals in February in preparation for the two upcoming performances\, one on Palm Sunday\, March 29th\, and the second on Tuesday\, March 31st\, at 7:00 pm both evenings at Grace Lutheran Church\, 1061 Sherman Street in Sturgis\, \nThis year’s cantata\, Upon This Rock\, composed by Pepper Choplin\, is told in the voice of Peter\, Jesus’ disciple. As the narration about Peter unfolds\, it is evident that he was a passionate person. This works leads the listener through his experience with Christ. As the story unfolds through Peter’s eyes\, the audience is led to ask\, “What is our passion? What is our call? Who do we live for?” \nCome experience the Easter message sung by the 64-voice choir conducted by Marlene Kotab with a portrayal of Peter by Randy Bender. Embrace the message of Upon this Rock. There is no admission charge\, but your free-will offerings are always appreciated to help cover expenses.

SUMMARY:The Two Tracks
DESCRIPTION:2022 & 2024 Wyoming Arts Council Performing Arts Fellowship Winners\n“They avoid many of the cliches and gimmicks that have grown common in the Americana world while still championing a natural\, Earth-grown sound. To hear an acoustic quartet reach a level of dynamic and thematic intensity like The Two Tracks do is an immeasurably rewarding experience. It’s pure musicianship\, it’s pure excellence\, it’s pure Americana.” – American Songwriter\nRooted in the wide-open landscapes of Wyoming\, The Two Tracks create music that fuses rich storytelling\, soulful harmonies\, and the spirit of the American West. Led by songwriters Julie and Dave Huebner. With Taylor Phillips on bass and Fernando Serna on drums\, the band has carved out a sound that nods to ’70s Americana while forging something entirely their own. Dave’s signature cello playing\, woven into the band’s four-part harmonies\, brings a distinctive edge that sets them apart. \nWith four acclaimed albums and tours across the U.S. and abroad—including a performance at the World Expo in Dubai—the band has graced major stages such as Americanafest (TN)\, Kate Wolf Music Festival (CA)\, Albino Skunk Music Festival (SC)\, Red Ants Pants (MT)\, and NewWestFest (CO). They’ve also shared bills with artists like Orville Peck\, Eilen Jewell\, The Brothers Comatose\, and Shook Twins.\nTheir most recent release\, It’s a Complicated Life\, produced by Will Kimbrough and engineered by Grammy-winner Sean Sullivan\, highlights the band’s dynamic range: from Julie’s raw reflections in The Push and The Pull and Dave’s heartfelt Momma’s Gone\, to political anthems like Workingman’s Blues and the infectious rocker In the Morning.\nAt the heart of The Two Tracks is a deep commitment to connection\, on stage and on record. Their four-part harmonies\, heartfelt songwriting\, and joyful energy resonate long after the last note\, leaving audiences with the sense of having truly shared an experience. Album #5 is already on the horizon\, slated for a 2026 release.\nDoors open at 6:00 PM\, and the show starts at 7:00 PM on Friday\, April 3\, 2026\, right here at The Matthews Opera House. Tickets are $25 + Fees

SUMMARY:The Dead & Down and My Second Rodeo
DESCRIPTION:The Dead & Down | April 10\, 7PM | The Matthews Opera House. Alt-country meets prog-rock in a sound that refuses to fit in one bin.\nThe Dead & Down are an indie roots-rock band that refuses to stay in one lane. Fronted by Taylor Burlage’s introspective songwriting and dusty vocals\, they blend alt-country\, atmospheric indie rock\, psychedelia\, and unexpected prog-rock detours into something that feels entirely their own. Their Montana roots run deep\, and so does their ambition—they’ve opened for Fruition\, Futurebirds\, and Blind Pilot\, and their 2024 release No Broken Bones proves they’re a band willing to take real chances. As one critic put it: “Alt-country\, but on the moon—and still so down to earth.”\nYou’re in for a night of music that stays interesting. April 10\, 2026 at The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center. Doors TBD\, show time 7:00 PM. Tickets are $20. My Second Rodeo opens the show. Come early\, stay late\, and bring friends who appreciate the kind of songwriting that makes you think and move at the same time.\nThis is the kind of music and artistry we’re proud to bring to downtown Spearfish. When bands like The Dead & Down choose to play here\, it’s a reminder that the Black Hills are on the creative map.\nGrab your tickets now. At $20 and with a night this good\, seats won’t wait around.

SUMMARY:Atmospheric Thinking/Call for Art
DESCRIPTION:Submission Deadline: May 15\, 2026 \nExhibition Dates: July 10-August 28\, 2026 \nVenue: John A. Day Gallery\, University of South Dakota\, Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts \nThe University Art Galleries invites emerging\, mid-career\, and established artists to submit work for Atmospheric Thinking\, a juried exhibition examining contemporary interpretations of the sky as subject\, medium\, and metaphor. Across disciplines\, the sky has served as a site of scientific observation\, spiritual imagination\, environmental urgency\, and aesthetic inquiry. In the context of a rapidly changing atmosphere—meteorological\, political\, and digital—this exhibition invites artists to interrogate\, disrupt\, and reimagine the sky beyond its traditional role as a background or horizon. \nhttps://www.usdartgalleries.com/call-for-art-2026
