SUMMARY:SONGS OF SPIRIT: A Free A Cappella Concert by Mirabile
DESCRIPTION:The women’s singing group Mirabile\, now in its 15th year\, will be presenting “Songs of Spirit” on Sunday\, March 29\, at 3 p.m.\, in the historic AME Church (508 Cedar\, Yankton). The free concert will include two African-American spirituals — especially appropriate in this very special venue — plus a set of Shaker Songs\, an Appalachian folk tune\, the anthem “Sing Me to Heaven\,” an audience-participation piece called “What Happens When a Woman?\,” and more — all a cappella. All full of spirit. Singers include Sandy Cope\, Kathy Grow\, Jennifer Powell\, Lea Ann Schramm\, Sylvia Selgestad\, Linda Stevens\, and Janine Tramp. DESCRIPTION:Take in a screening of the classic 1929 Soviet film “The New Babylon” – which magnificently pairs propaganda with art – with Dmitri Shostakovich’s score performed live\, a discussion on the film and history of the Paris Commune which the film is based on and other musical excerpts with Scholar in Residence\, Joseph Horowitz. About the film: In the short-lived Commune of Paris\, a conscripted soldier falls in love with a Communard saleswoman. As the army cracks down on the revolutionaries\, the soldier is forced to fight against the Commune\, and the pair’s love is put to the test. Don’t miss this unique event!
