SUMMARY:South Dakota Art Museum Guild Program: Rodger Ellingson | Events and Seasons: Painting in Living Color
DESCRIPTION:The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will host a program at the South Dakota Art Museum on April 28\, featuring Sioux Falls artist Rodger Ellingson. Coffee and social time begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10. \nEllingson will present “Events and Seasons: Painting in Living Color” featuring works from his body of plein air and studio paintings in watercolor and acrylic. His favorite subjects are the cities and countryside of the upper Midwest and the northern Rockies. \nWorking in both watercolor and acrylic\, Ellingson usually paints smaller plein air paintings of nature or downtown scenes during the summer. During the winter he creates larger\, more colorful acrylic paintings. These larger paintings often include groups of people in various local settings. For example\, his 36” by 36” acrylic on canvas “Augustana Band” colorfully captures the bright energy of a marching band on game day and was featured in the South Dakota Governor’s 11th Biennial Art Exhibition on display at the South Dakota Art Museum in 2025. His work can be seen at the East Bank Gallery in Sioux Falls and at area art festivals. \nThis program is the sixth in the Art Museum Guild’s 2025-26 season with monthly gatherings featuring free talks by artists\, authors\, curators\, and museum professionals. The community is welcome to attend and encouraged to support the Guild’s programs and art acquisition fund with annual dues of $30. The South Dakota Art Museum is located at 1036 Medary Avenue in Brookings. There is free designated parking on Harvey Dunn Street\, just west of the museum.

DESCRIPTION:Discover the creative world of wood carving with Steve Hunter. A Toronto\, SD-based carver that has been carving since 1998. This beginner-friendly course is designed both for absolute beginners and for those coming back to carving after a pause. Learn core safety and carving fundamentals using one knife\, plus a complete end-to-end project. The atmosphere is relaxed\, fun\, and supportive\, with patient coaching. \nYour registration includes a full personal carving kit to keep:\n•     High-quality carving knife\n•     Cut-resistant carving glove\n•     Finger safety tape\n•     Leather strop and stropping compound\n•     Carving pattern and basswood for project and practice\n•     Pencil\n•     Heavy canvas tool roll and a heavy-duty canvas bag \nMinimum age is 16 or 14 if accompanied by an adult in all sessions.
